Sav Day 3

October 3rd. I am beginning to realize how difficult it is going to be to narrow it down to 31 businesses for the month. Woke up today without a phone alarm, but to the sound of our dog nudging the bedside ready to play. Our pup Kaley (who will be two in November) is literally a bundle of energy, Much like my fiancé and I, she need lots of activity, and sometimes that means waking up 6am on a Saturday ready to explore. After an early morning stroll we came back to get ready for the day.

My fiancé has lived in Savannah previously, and I have been here enough to know that I love a trip to the farmers market. We are in Georgia, obviously, and there seems to be a decent amount of farming here, and yes more than just peaches (although they are amazing, so there is no question as to why the state is known for them). But alas, peach season is way over, its been in the 70s so it’s practically winter here, and they are a summer fruit. But on a mission to continue to stock the fridge I headed to find cheese, bread, produce, and of course a treat.

The Forsyth Farmers’ Market is every Saturday, and has over 20 vendors, the ideal place for me to find a local business. I wanted something different so I went with Southern Brothers Farms, a mushroom farm! I am no stranger to a farmers market, I used to sell the best cheese at few of them back in New York, shoutout McGrath Cheese Company, and I love getting to know vendors at the markets. You get the best understanding of the product when you simply ask the vendor about it. I think one of the allures of a farmer’s market is having a better idea of what you are putting into your body, correct? So we had a blueberry danish, walked around the park a bit with Kaley, and then started chatting it up with the vendors.. Southern Brothers Farms is a small mushroom farm started in 2017, in which they grow all their product inside, not foraged. We bought half a pound of oyster mushrooms that I wound up making for dinner.

We also got some wheat sourdough, pesto goat cheese, muscadine grapes, and a milk & honey ice pop. Like I was saying earlier, how will I ever narrow it down to 31 businesses?! I took our amazing mushrooms, and cut them length wise (like to resemble the shape of a steak), got my dutch oven nice and warm and then butter basted them. Look this isn’t a cooking or recipe blog, but these babies got all golden brown and crispy on the outside. Umami masterpiece with just salt, pepper, olive oil, butter, and good quality mushrooms. But if you are interested check out how they look before, during, and after.

Pretty neat, huh? Also a great vegan or vegetarian sub if you are looking to go meatless or just eat a little less meat. We had ours on top of a toasted baguette with Brie cheese.

We had an awesome day, my first weekend living in Savannah. One week ago today I left New York. I was saying to a friend that it literally feels like I stepped into another world, which in a way I guess I kind of did. It is hard to not compare places to one another, I am doing my best to stay present (always a practice), and enjoy this sweet sweet life of mine.

Thanks for reading, hope to '“see” you soon.

XO
